HISTORY

During the 60s people with disabilities were totally excluded from society, and for this reason, a group of parents, enthusiastic and committed, came together around their friendship and determination to find a better future for children with intellectual disabilities.  In this manner the Neurological Institute of Guatemala was founded.

On July 21st, 1961, by means of the issuance of a Governmental Agreement, the legal representation and the approval of the first bylaws of the Institute were achieved. On August 21st of the same year, the first Board of Directors was elected and took office on September 6th, during a meeting held at the Rotary Club of Guatemala an entity that has continually sponsored the Institute.

In February 1962, the Institute opened the doors to its special education and diagnostic center with just 12 students, 1 teacher, and 2 assistants. The Institute’s population gradually increased, and at the end of that year, 44 students now made up the educational community.
Thanks to the negotiations that were done with the Government of the Republic of Guatemala, on the 25th of October, 1968, a property of 10,160 square meters was granted, in usufruct. Currently we occupy the area next to the emergency section of Roosevelt Hospital, Zone 11, in Guatemala City.

In those days, there were still no interventions and educational services available for children with special needs in Guatemala, and the Institute became the pioneer organization in Guatemala.

We extend to you our most cordial welcome to our institute, join us and support our cause. #TakeMeIntoAccount
